It’s actually going to get in the 30s here tonight which is very rare for us this time of year. I am going to bring my herbs inside. I know basil doesn’t like low temperatures. The wind is blustery right now, bringing in this cold front, and I love hearing the song of the leaves as they move and sway. I think the wind will blow all the lingering petals off the wilting azaleas and from my bright magenta rose bush as well. All the riotous color of Spring in the South is coming to an end.
This is the time of year to bring the outside in. There is beauty everywhere! I keep snips on hand to clip branches, bushes, flowers, herbs, and bring them in and plop them in vases. I have long loved the inexpensive white milk glass vases that you can find regularly in thrift shops. They are such a great “neutral” to have on hand to add clippings to. I love tucking flowers into windowsills and bathrooms, desks, and side tables. This is part of what makes Spring special: the plentiful art to enjoy!
So with the wind threatening to remove the flowers from the bushes, I took my snips outside a few minutes ago to retrieve some beauty for my home. Sometimes I can make this harder than it needs to be or think “it will take so long”. It takes all of three-five minutes. Snip, remove lower greenery so it doesn’t rot the water, and place in a vase with water. That’s it. No need to be fussy with yard greens and flowers. Just enjoy the messy simplicity of a yard bouquet.
May you find some beauty today. Little bits to add charm and joy to your corners. It’s worth it to slow down and look for it, to savor it, and to bring the outside in. When life becomes too busy to contemplate beauty, then something needs to shift. Beauty softens our hearts. Beauty is an arrow pointing us to Him. Beauty heals. And it’s an abundant gift this time of year.
Much love,
Aimee
