Spots for Seasonal Decor
It doesn’t take long for me to feel like my decor feels “stale”. Surfaces become cluttered, vignettes get wonky, and wall art looks meh. Right when I begin to notice the home-blahs, it is often at the end of a season. As we move towards the end of winter, many of our spaces may feel heavy and boring. We can begin to make some shifts to lighten our living spaces with some spring pillows and lightweight throws. For me, the quickest cure for the decor blues is to decorate a few dedicated spaces according to the upcoming holiday or season. My spaces include the dresser in my kitchen along with the wall above it, a side dresser in a corner of my dining room by our table, and my coffee bar (yes, technically it’s a 70s wet bar, but we have made it a hot drinks station!) I might sprinkle some random seasonal decor in other places, but I mostly stick to these three spots.
Picking a few seasonal spots in your home means that you don’t have to get overwhelmed with decorating for the seasons or holidays. Adding a few touches in two to three designated places brings beauty, fresh visual interest, and renewed joy. Beautiful items can be found if you regularly haunt your local thrift stores, and you can easily spruce up a spot for under $20. If you shop a big-box store, you can quickly spend five times that amount and the purchases are usually cheaply made and lack long-term aesthetic appeal.
In these photos that I have shared, the decorator uses a base of ironstone tureens placed on platters. Then she layers in seasonal dishes upright on the back wall along with small stacks of plates, cups, teapots, creamers. The last bits to be placed are all the small + lively seasonal elements like vintage postcards, farm animals, landscapes, and smalls. You can see here an archive from the past year of how her “holiday cupboard” changes. Super fun and inspiring!
So now I am motivated to freshen my hot drink bar with some of her ideas. I will start with shopping my house and my Spring seasonal bin. Then I’ll grab a $20 bill and go to 2-3 thrift shops with an eye towards green along with some pops of yellow and pink. Decorating like this is an adventure! When my days tend to look the same day after day, having a small adventure can invigorate and energize me as a walk this faithful path.
Yours for seasonal joy,
Aimee
